Preparing for the TABE and Mechanical Aptitude Tests

What is the TABE test and what is on it?

The TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) is a standardized test designed to measure achievement in reading, mathematics, language, and spelling. The Florida Department of Education offers a TABE FAQ and review materials that contain examples of questions on the test. Many employers only require the reading and math portions of the test.

Preparing for the TABE Test

There are several ways to prepare for the TABE test including self-study, working with a tutor and formal classroom instruction. The information below is provided as a guide:

  • GED study guides. Review the reading comprehension and math sections of a GED study guide. These can be found at public libraries and local bookstores.
  • The Florida Department of Education offers a TABE preparation booklet and TABE review materials.
  • The Test Prep Review website has practice tests.
  • Lake City Community College offers a TABE review guide.
  • Building Skills with TABE workbooks may also help prepare for the TABE test. These workbooks may be available at FCCJ bookstores and through booksellers such as Amazon, Books-A-Million and Barnes and Nobles.

Preparing for the Mechanical Aptitude Tests

The Bennett Test of Mechanical Comprehension (BMCT) or the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Ability (WTMA) are aptitude tests. The following books may offer some assistance in preparing for them. They are normally available through public libraries and local bookstores.

  • Arco Mechanical Aptitude and Spatial Relations Tests book.
  • Barron’s - How to Prepare for the Mechanical Aptitude and Spatial Relations Tests.
  • ASVAB. The mechanical reasoning section of any ASVAB study guide.

Testing Notes

  • The fee for taking both the TABE and either the BMCT or the WTMA at FCCJ is $40. If you have previously tested and need to retest in only one section the fee is $25 per test or $40 both tests.
  • A valid government issued ID card is required for testing. No ID. No testing.
  • JEA will accept test scores that are less than two years old. If you have previously tested and passed these tests, please call us at 632-5020 and we will send your scores to JEA. You may purchase a personal copy of your TABE and mechanical aptitude scores for $5 each or $10 for both.
