Florida Community Collegehas been in an evolving training and education relationship with the United States military that dates back to the early days of the College. Now approaching nearly 40 years of partnership, Florida Community College has emerged as a national leader in educational services for the U.S. Navy and is branching out in service to the Army, the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard. With one of the larges online education programs in the world, Florida Community College serves more military veterans than any community college in the United States.
Some of our more recent accomplishments with the different branches of the U.S. Military:
Army
In May 2006, Florida Community College began implementing the Army’s Centralized Tuition Assistance Management (CTAM) program. Army students worldwide wanting to participate in voluntary education and receive Tuition Assistance (TA) must register through the www.GoArmyEd.com portal for online classes. All of the management functions from applying to the college, registering for specific classes, receiving grades and graduation certificates, processing Army TA invoices and resolving individual soldier helpdesk cases, are conducted via FTP files directly to the College.
In June 2004, the Army and Florida Community College were jointly recognized in statewide competition as regional winners for 2003 in the second annual "Florida's Best." The award recognizes their partnership in providing computer engineering technology training for soldiers. Training can be provided anywhere in the world, and soldiers gain credit toward a college degree for professional military training. Thousand of soldiers are eligible to receive this training, which became available in October 2003.
In August 2003, Florida Community College was selected by the Servicemen Opportunity College Army Degree (SOCAD) program to provide a Criminal Justice Technology Associate in Science degree through the Army Career Degree Plan.
Coast Guard
In July 2003, Florida Community College became a charter member of the Servicemembers Opportunity College Coast Guard (SOCCOAST) Afloat Consortium. The College signed an agreement with the Coast Guard Institute to deliver college credit courses via CD-ROM to Coast Guard members deployed on U.S. Coast Guard vessels around the world.
In December 2003, Florida Community College signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Coast Guard to provide Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training to personnel at NSB Kings Bay, GA. Florida Community College is a preferred provider of global, inline degrees to Coast Guard personnel.
Marine Corps
In February 2002, Florida community College's Military Education Institute was selected by the Marine Corps to provide Florida Community College credit classes for First Responder - EMT training for the Marines and other Department of Defense personnel at NSB Kings Bay, Georgia. The course meets the Marine requirements for certification in First Responder training. In March 2003, the training agreement was extended for an additional year.
Navy
In July 2007, Florida Community College was awarded a sole-source, 3-year contract to manage a pilot program entitled Accelerate to Excellence. This program provides Sailors who select one of 11 Navy occupations (mostly aviation rates) to attend two semesters at a local community college anywhere in the nation, followed by Recruit Training in Great Lakes, and then “A” school in Pensacola, Florida. While at Pensacola, these Sailors will attend their final semester with FCCJ, receive American Council on Education military training and experience credits and graduate with an Associate in Science in Industrial Management Technology degree before being assigned to the fleet.
In January 2004, Florida Community College signed a partnership with the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to reduce workplace hazards in several high-risk industries: ship building and repairs; landscaping and horticulture services. In January 2003, Florida Community College established and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Defense Training Education College Consortium. Florida Community College is the lead school in this consortium to respond to Request for Proposals for Department of Defense education and training services.
In January 2003, only 50 sailors were selected for the Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program (MECP) Navy-wide. Six of those selected were from Florida Community College at Jacksonville students -- a selection rate of 12 percent.
The American Culinary Federation, Florida Community College, and the Navy are working together to offer the career opportunities for Navy sailors as chefs. Since May 2003, Florida Community College has had a chef/instructor at the NAS Jacksonville, Florida and NSB Kings Bay, Georgia galleys for credit and non-credit on-duty culinary training.
In December 2003, Florida community College's Institute of Occupational Safety and Health signed a Memorandum of Understand with Navy Region Southeast to articulate four Navy safety and emergency response training courses into two college credit courses within the Environmental Science A.S. degree program.
Florida Community College was awarded a $15 million, five-year contract in January 2002 to provide Force Protection/Anti-Terrorism and Law Enforcement training to over 2,000 sailors per year. There are five different courses involved in this training including a six-week course that is an official Navy "A" school. The courses include extensive weapons training and boast the highest pass rate in the nation.
In January 2002, Florida Community College developed a five-year training contract with Harbor Operations, Naval Station Mayport, to provide hazardous materials training and to award credited for Navy hazardous materials training.
In December 2002, an addendum was signed to the Memorandum of Understand with Naval Station Mayport to include the A.S. degree in Legal Assisting for the naval personnel stationed at Mayport, Florida. The College extended the MOU with Naval Air Station Jacksonville to include the A.S. degree in Criminal Justice.
In 2000, Florida Community College was one of only four community colleges in the nation selected by the Navy College Rating Program, along with 13 universities, to provide global, online degrees to Navy personnel. Sailors and their family members located in 13 states and 14 countries are enrolled in Florida Community College's degree programs.
In September 2000, Florida Community College was the only community college selected by the Navy to offer the Navy Nuclear Tech Prep program. The credit received through Florida Community College and credit awarded for Navy Nuclear Power training will provide sailors with all the requirements for an A.S. degree in Industrial Management Technology (Naval Nuclear Power Operations track).
In July 1999, the Chief of Naval Education and Training (CNET) declared Florida Community College as a non-Navy designated training center.
In August 1999, through nationally competitive bids, Florida Community College was awarded a contract to teach Navy "C" school courses. A total of nine courses were awarded to Florida Community College for Home Port Training in Mess Operations, Food Services, and Disbursing.
